Mother's Return

Mother's Return

In “Mother’s Return,” I sought to capture the dark triumph of the opening scene of Diablo IV, where Elias successfully summons Lilith, the daughter of Hatred. I was particularly drawn to the visual contrasts in this moment; the blood and sinew that entwine Lilith as she descends, the cape that drapes behind her, and the intense crimson that stands out against the almost black, grey-blue setting. I wanted to highlight the malevolent energy of Lilith, and her calm, sinister blue eyes reflecting across the hidden temple seemed to encapsulate the darkness about to unfold.

Creating this piece was also a way for me to pay tribute to the captivating opening cinematic of Diablo IV, a game that has fascinated me with its macabre storyline and immersive world. I was compelled to capture the essence of that cinematic on canvas, to draw viewers into the world of Diablo and invite them to explore its depths and uncover its secrets.

The limited color palette was a conscious choice to heighten the painting’s impact. The crimson of Lilith’s threads of blood and sinew naturally draws the eye, while the grey-blue backdrop creates a sense of foreboding. The reflection of Lilith’s calm, sinister blue eyes across the hidden temple suggests a malevolent presence about to reveal itself. Together, these elements create a sense of anticipation, inviting viewers to delve deeper into the painting and, by extension, the world of Diablo.
